Evaluation Question 5

Certain aspects of our film opening appeal specifically to our target audience.

MISE EN SCENE
The mise en scene, especially the costumes, is one of these. The costumes worn by the actors, is typical of many male teens today therefore seeing that they are wearing something the actors are wearing may appeal to the audience. Our props may have also attracted our audience in some way, for example, the football, many males are interested in the sport therefore find a large interested in films or anything else to do with them.

STORYLINE
Also the storyline has a large effect on the audience. A majority of our audience can relate to the storyline therefore become interested in watching it. The storyline has both football dreams and gang related scenes therefore appealing to the target audience that can relate to either of these.

FILM NAME
Our film title GRIND appeals to our target audience because it's a word they're all familiar with. It fits in with the slang used by many of our target audience and we expect teens more than anyone else to understand the way we're interpreting the word. It also gives an idea of the sub-genre and storyline as once they understand and see the title, they would refer it to gangs, violence and something that appeals to them as they can relate.

 SOUND
One of our sound tracks was produced by my group therefore it didn't appeal to the audience as much as the second sound track did. However our own sound track was parallel to the action. The second sound track was an instrumental from a popular song trending with our target audience at the time.

SUB-GENRE
Our sub-genre was youth drama, this mean that again, most of our target audience would be able to relate to it, especially seen as it was London based, and there's a high majority of teens in London today who are involved in or know someone who is involved in gangs, crime, violence, conflict with authority. Our sub-genre is the same to that of Kidulthood, Shank, etc who all attract the same audience as we have, a similar storyline, characters, costumes and have been successful in doing so. Therefore we have reached out to this large group of people in the hope that we have the same result.

PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION COMPANY
Our production and distribution companies were independent due to our low budget but I researched into other youth dramas and found that again successful films such as Kidulthood also used Revolver Entertainment. If our target audience see this they'll have expectations about the type of film we're producing, which is the idea we want them to have.
Fi Dem Production is more of a personal company that we've used to attempt to connect with our audience however it wasn't as successful as Revolver Entertainment in terms of appealing to the audience.

ROUGH CUT FEEDBACK - DID IT HELP IMPROVE OUR FILM IN ORDER TO APPEAL TO THE TARGET AUDIENCE?
We managed to successfully decide on locations, costumes, props, sound and camera work however our feedback suggested we needed to make our storyline clearer therefore resulting in us coming up with the idea of both conforming and challenging the stereotypes of male teens. This went down well with our intended target audience.

HOW HAVE WE REACHED OUR AUDIENCE SO FAR?
To reach our audience so far we've had a cinema preview specifically for college students who we see to be a majority of our target audience. We gathered feedback from some of the audience when the preview was over to see if we were successful in appealing to them.

We also used popular social networking sites such as twitter to connect with our audience and attract them as we know that our target audiences' age group spend a large amount of time on sites like these. We also uploaded it to YouTube and Vimeo which are sites viewed regularly by teens everyday.

HAS OUR FILM ATTRACTED ANOTHER AUDIENCE THAN WE ANTICIPATED?
GRIND has managed to attract a small group who we didn't anticipate. During our editing process we gathered feedback from male adults around the college who seemed to be interested in what ideas we had come up with and the way in which we presented our title and storyline.
